Oral Pathology and Biopsies of the Mouth + Jaws

Dr. Patel performs numerous biopsies in and around the mouth. Any abnormal change in appearance of the skin (mucosa) of the oral cavity could be a warning sign for a pathological process. The most serious of these is oral cancer. The following presentations are an indication for biopsy:

Any areas of ulceration that fail to heal within two weeks.
Reddish patches (erythroplasia) or whitish patches (leukoplakia) in the mouth.
Any lumps or thickening of the mucosa insiide of the mouth.
Chronic sore throat or hoarseness.
Difficulty in chewing or swallowing.
A biopsy is always recommended for diagnostic confidence.
